So we have been wanting to see the salmon running since we knew we were moving here. Its finally that time of year so I took the girls down to The tumwater falls hatchery. They had a big festival that day with apple cider making and it was put on by the Pioneer kids. The girls loved all the games and festivities they had with rope making and all the simple games that were played way back then. When we went down to see the salmon there was a lady volunteer that was explaining it all to us. The salmon swim up the ladder to the falls and end up in these pools. They pick the "good ones" out and slice them in half and scoop out the eggs. All 3000 eggs are harvested and set free back in puget sound. THe remains of the salmon are donated to food banks, made into fertilizer or made into dog/cat food. DANG!! I really wanted to see if we could buy it right there!! But nope. So the girls were up close really checking out these GIANT fish. THey are seriously the size of aubrey wynne. Aub yells out " Wow momma look at the teeth!!" and just as she finished saying that .. one jumped up right in front of her and splashes us..They both screamed and of course everyone laughed... It was a very cool experience for all 3 of us. Hopefully by the time Thads home we can still go up and see them. I think he'd enjoy it too!
